Modifying the size of our doll clothes knitting patterns
Here are some steps to follow. This example is for downsizing a pattern that fit a 45 cm doll to fit a 36 cm doll, but it can be adjusted to any pattern size. You may want to test it first with one of our free patterns.
Downsizing a knitting pattern for a 45 cm doll to fit a 36 cm doll involves adjusting the stitch count and possibly the row count to ensure that the clothes will fit the smaller doll properly. Here are some specific steps you can follow to downsize the pattern:
Gauge Swatch:
- Start by knitting a gauge swatch with the same yarn and needles you plan to use for the project. Follow the instructions in the pattern, but use the smaller doll's measurements as a reference for the gauge.
- Measure your gauge in stitches per inch or centimeter to determine the difference between the pattern's gauge and your gauge. For example, if the original pattern calls for 5 stitches per inch and your gauge is 6 stitches per inch, you'll need to adjust the pattern accordingly.
Calculate the Scale Factor:
- To downsize the pattern, calculate the scale factor by dividing the smaller doll's measurement (36 cm) by the larger doll's measurement (45 cm). In this case, the scale factor is 36 cm / 45 cm = 0.8.
Adjust the Stitch Count:
- Multiply the original pattern's stitch count by the scale factor to determine the new stitch count for the smaller doll. For example, if the pattern originally instructs you to cast on 40 stitches for the 45 cm doll, the adjusted stitch count would be 40 stitches * 0.8 = 32 stitches.
Adjust the Row Count:
- In some cases, you may need to adjust the row count as well to maintain the same proportions as the original pattern. To do this, multiply the original pattern's row count by the scale factor. For example, if the pattern instructs you to knit 60 rows for the 45 cm doll, the adjusted row count would be 60 rows * 0.8 = 48 rows.
Modify Other Instructions:
- Review the pattern for any specific instructions related to shaping, increases, decreases, or other design elements. Adjust these instructions according to the scale factor. For instance, if the pattern instructs you to decrease every 8th row, you would now decrease every 6th row (8 rows * 0.8 = 6.4, rounded to the nearest whole number).
Follow the Pattern:
- Once you've made all the necessary adjustments, follow the downsized pattern using the new stitch and row counts. Be sure to maintain the same stitch pattern (e.g., ribbing, lace, cables) as specified in the original pattern.
Check Fit:
- As you progress with your knitting, periodically check the fit of the garment on the smaller doll to ensure it's turning out as expected.
By following these steps, you should be able to successfully downsize the knitting pattern to fit your 36 cm doll while maintaining the overall design and proportions of the original pattern.
