In 2008, something special was set in motion. Målfrid Gausel, already a renowned designer with six doll knitting books published through the Norwegian book club, sought a way to share her artistry with a broader audience. That’s when she and Kjell Ramstad began discussing how to bring her intricate doll knitting patterns to knitters worldwide. Their collaboration led to a joint venture, where Målfrid focused entirely on her unique designs while Kjell handled the marketing, website, and photography.
They wanted to do something extraordinary as 2009 approached—their first full year working together. The idea was simple yet ambitious: twelve doll knitting patterns, one for each month, each capturing a part of Norwegian culture. However, to make the concept even more unique, they needed a doll to bring this vision to life.
They found their perfect muse in Kirsten, the American Girl doll representing a Swedish immigrant girl arriving in the United States in 1854. Kirsten’s heritage was the ideal bridge between Scandinavian tradition and American culture, making her the perfect figure to showcase the Best of Doll Knitting Patterns 2009.
Each month, Målfrid carefully designed a new pattern reflecting a special moment in Norwegian life. January’s elegant lilac and grey outfit set the tone with a structured jacket, pleated skirt, and stylish ankle shoes. February introduced a touch of history, featuring an intricate sweater inspired by a beautiful Estonian design. March brought delicate spring colors with heart-patterned tunics and lovely tights, while April’s ski outfit captured the joy of the winter holidays.
With every pattern, Målfrid envisioned how Kirsten would wear it in real-life settings, and Kjell set out to find the perfect locations. He carried Kirsten and her outfits through Norway’s landscapes—standing on the slanted roof of the new Opera House, strolling among the sculptures in Vigeland Park, and even braving the iconic Norwegian ski slopes. This attention to detail and cultural storytelling turned the series into more than knitting patterns—it became an artistic tribute to Norway, making it the Best of Doll Knitting Patterns 2009 series.
To deepen the historical significance of the series, Kjell brought Kirsten to the Kon-Tiki Museum, home to Thor Heyerdahl’s legendary raft that crossed the Pacific Ocean in 1947, a testament to Norwegian exploration and adventure. Another essential stop was Gleng Person’s home, the first Norwegian immigrant to settle in the United States in 1825, symbolizing the journey of countless Scandinavians who sought a new life across the Atlantic. These locations connected Kirsten’s story with real history, linking Norwegian heritage to the American experience, just as the American Girl doll initially represented.
Today, looking back at more than 100,000 sales since 2008, one thing is clear: the Kirsten series remains a favorite among knitters worldwide. It is not just a collection of patterns—it is a story, a journey through Norway’s seasons and traditions, beautifully captured in stitches.
As we celebrate this milestone, we invite you to explore the Best of Doll Knitting Patterns 2009, rediscover the joy of knitting, and bring a piece of Norwegian culture into your collection. Whether you’re recreating the classic designs or knitting them for the first time, these patterns are a testament to Målfrid Gausel’s timeless artistry.
